    Dear Father,

    Thank you for the good copy of the picture of Sister Mary Humiliana. There are not too many still alive who remember her since she died in 1936, but for the few who do, I agree that it will be a treat to have a better likeness of her

    I's sorry to report that I do not have much to add to your research on Sr. Mary Humiliana. I had one of our sisters who knows German read from our entrance book the notation on Sister re: Savannah, Georgia. She said it read: "Comes to us from Savannah, Georgia." I have no idea why she would have been there, but hoped that you would have some family connections that would explain it.

    Quite by accident, this sister was one who remembered Sister. She told me that Sister Mary Humiliana was a homemaker for the sisters in her home town when her mother was in school. Sister was in this sister's home town in 1888 so that would have been shortly after she entered our community. In those days, new members often went on mission as postulants or novices.

    As to whether or not Sister M. Humiliana knew German I can only tell you that all who entered our community in the early days had to learn German. Prayers were said in German and most of our early sisters were from Germany, so she was surrounded by it. Only in 1914 or thereabouts did the Archbishop ask us not to pray in German since sentiments against the Germans was so strong at this time.
