Simon Patrick Smith
Known as "Si" in the family and "Pat" at his job of advance man for the Ringling Bros. circus.
He had a sever infection in his right hand and arm. He went to the hospital and his condition deteriorated very rapidly within a day or so. A nurse found a rosary in his coat pocket and asked if he were Catholic. He could not speak but wrote "Mass" on a piece of paper. The nurse called a priest who gave him the last sacraments and wrote letters to his mother, Nellie K. Smith and to his brother, Leo Smith.
Immediately after his death, his body was shipped by train to Portland. His funeral Mass was at St. Mary's Cathedral and burial at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. (Leo covered expenses]
