E-mail from Marilyn Kavanaugh, wife of Jim Kavanaugh from Seattle, 4-22-2004 to David Myers:

A copy of your Uncle Joe's obituary for your records. Jim just gave a fine eulogy for him at the 5:30 Mass tonite [St. Patrick's Church, Seattle].

An interesting tidbit: Joe's uncle, Joe Kavanaugh, brother of Gerald, Annie, Nellie et al, died of the flu epidemic in 1920. This Joe K. was born in 1920 and died of the flu as well. All 7 of his children, most of his 11 grandkids and at least one g/grandchild will be at the services in Walla Walla this weekend as will we and 2 -3 of our adult children as well.

Here's the final draft that will appear in the [Walla Walla, Washington] Union Bulletin on Wednesday.

Joseph Hildward Kavanaugh, 83, of 1040 N. Clinton Street died at his home April 15, 2004. Joe was born May 6, 1920 in Lewiston, Idaho, the son of Lena Grace Short and Gerald Vincent Kavanaugh. He graduated from Lewiston High School an attended Lewiston Normal School Before being drafted into the U. S. Army during World War II. He served as troop transport driver and company clerk for the 3rd Strategic Air Division-8th Air Force in England from 1943-1945. He achieved the rank of sergeant prior to his honorable discharge.

He continued his education at the University of Idaho School of Engineering at Moscow until 1948 when he began working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Soil & Foundation Department in Walla Walla. Joe retired from the Corps in 1985 after 37 years of employment.

Joe married Patricia Marie Malloy on June 30, 1951 at St. Patrick Church in Walla Walla. They spent 47 loving years together and raised nine children. Joe was a member of Assumption Church. He was a co-founder and past president of the St. Vincent De Paul Society in Walla Walla. As a member of the Knights of Columbus he served as Grand Knight and was a Faithful Navigator of the Fourth Degree Assembly.

Joe participated in many other community and service groups, including the Elks Club of Walla Walla, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the Corps of Engineers Retired Federal Employees Organization, and the Association for the Advancement of Retired Persons. He was involved with both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America with his children. He was active in the local Democratic Party and served as precinct chairman.

Joe was treasured by his family for his thoughtful deeds and generous nature. He was happiest in his role as family man who loved to visit family members, attend gatherings and celebrate holidays. In years past Joe enjoyed golf with long-time friends and attending minor league baseball games in Walla Walla. He visited many major league ballparks and often traveled to attend reunions of his Army unit. He was affectionately known as ?Radar O?Reilly? to his fellow veterans, because, like the M*A*S*H character, he was a wholesome Irish boy from a small town and was the company clerk. Joe was also well known as master of the corny joke.

Joe is survived by his sons, Gerald ?JK? Kavanaugh and wife, Tanh, of Rochester, New York, Bill and Kent Kavanaugh of Walla Walla and Richard Kavanaugh and wife, Carol Wilson of Olin, Iowa;his daughters, Colleen King and husband Greg of Spokane, Washington, Ginny Kavanaugh of Spokane, Washington and Kelli Malysheff and husband Tall of Maple Valley, Washington; his brother Jim Kavanaugh and wife Marilyn of Seattle, Washington; twelve grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pat, on May 15, 1998, sons Michael and John Kavanaugh, brothers Lawrence and Edward Kavanaugh, and sisters Eileen Etter and Kathleen Kavanaugh.

Husband, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, brother-in-law, and friend: He will be greatly missed and dearly remembered. Notes:

    County Laois (Laoighis)

Also known as "Leix", this region was part of the possessions of the O'Mores (or O'Moores) before the Norman invasion. As in so many cases, the Norman grant of the lands to the Fitzpatricks was largely unsuccessful and the native Irish remained a constant threat until the sixteenth century when, along with the neighbouring Offaly, Laois was annexed to the English crown under Queen Mary and renamed "Queen's county". In case the Irish still hadn't got the point, the principal town was also renamed Maryborough. The county was retitled Laois after Independence in 1922, and Maryborough became Portlaoise. The town is best known to most Irish people today as the home of the country's only high-security prison.

Physically, the county is centred on the valleys of the upper Nore and Barrow rivers; most of the Slieve Bloom mountains, with some of the most beautiful and secluded landscape in Ireland, are in Laois.

Surnames associated with the county include Fitzpatrick, Buggy, Bergin, Dunne, Deegan, Tynan, and Dowling.

Andrew married Mary Dunn 1835, Co. Loise, Ireland. Mary (daughter of William Dunn and Judith McGrath) was born 1815. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Mary Dunn was born 1815 (daughter of William Dunn and Judith McGrath).

    Notes:

She went to Europe and visited Ireland. Did not like it. There is much poverty.
