- Letter from Nuala Travers, January 28, 2008, Carnaross, Kells, Co. Meath, Ireland to David Myers:
I did tell you in my Christmas Card to you that Katie McCabe has died. She passed away peacefully in Cavan Nursing Home 1st Dec.
She celebrated her 90th birthday 3 weeks previously in the nursing home to which we were invited. She was in good form that day, but didn't recognize any of her family. She has been senile and blind for many years.
She had a wonderful big funeral--for someone who has been gone from the Parish of Virginia. I was surprised at how many came to pay their respects at her funeral and spoke so kindly of her.
My uncle Tom McCabe and Katie were introduced by a Match-Maker and there was no walking out and holding hands prior to the wedding. The Match-Maker arranged the wedding. Tom was 17 years older than Katie. When they married Paddy Dunne was their Best Man.
Sad to see the end of an era and the Smith land sold. Our daughter is hoping to build a house on the farm adjoining Smith's farm. Actually it was all Smith land originally.
